EU Closes Bluefin Tuna Fishing Season owing to Depleted Stocks

The European Commission is closing the bluefin tuna fishing season before time because of diminished stocks, inflicting an interdict, which will come into effect on Thursday.

The injunction includes fishing grounds in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic.

According to ecologists, Bluefin tuna caught in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic is overfished and on the verge of depletion.

The fish is mainly prized in Japan where high prices are paid for the important component for sushi.

The Commission says that it influences industrial purse seine fishing that makes up for above 70% of the yearly EU tuna catch.

The fleets are strong in France, Spain and Italy. The season was at first, scheduled to finish on 15 June.

The Commission said that the closing of the purse seine fishery is essential to shield the weak stock of bluefin tuna and to guarantee its revitalization, as envisioned by the revival proposal of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (Iccat).

The Commission has announced a zero forbearance tactic towards over indulgence in fishing and will take all required measures to guarantee complete obedience extensively.
