CERT Australia to Replace AusCERT

The Rudd Government dumped the nation's Computer Emergency Response Team, AusCERT. CERT Australia, which is newly established by the Federal Government, will replace AusCERT. CERT Australia will take over the important role of frontline protection against cyber-threats.

Federal Attorney-General, Robert McClelland revealed that CERT Australia will now be the only supplier of national CERT services to the community.

Mr. Crowley shared that it is hoped that CERT Australia won’t utilize taxpayer funds to duplicate the services of a not-for-profit organization, as it has a reputation of delivering these services successfully for many years.

Mr. McClelland allocated $6.2 million in the budget to bring AusCERT and GovCERT collectively in partnership with CSOC, last year.

Mr. McClelland said, “But it's hard to escape the conclusion that the global cyber-security environment continues to deteriorate, with most crime indicators showing that the problem is getting worse rather than better”.

He shared further that Government was taking initiative to sign up with the global treaty whose aim is to at fight deception and other offences committed while using the internet, like computer hacking, child pornography and copyright infringement.

Many organizations would benefit from AusCERT’s expertise and services, revealed Mr. Crowley. He stated that they were able to assist their overseas counterparts resolve matters locally, as per the requirement.
