The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) is planning to stop the growth of mosquitoes in the city by adopting various measures. The city was recently rated as the second cleanest urban area in the country.
The city is now trying to control the growth of mosquitoes by releasing the varieties of fishes into water bodies that feed on mosquitoes. It hopes to decrease the incidence of diseases like malaria, dengue and chikungunya by adopting these measures.
The larvae-eating fish were released into Karanji Lake by Mayor Sandesh Swamy as part of an experiment. It included varieties of gambusia and guppy, the two fish breeds that are commonly known as larvae-eating fish breeds. In the coming days another larvae-eating fish breed, common carp will be released into various water bodies.
If this approach proves successful, it will see widespread adoption. The approach has already proved successful in Mandya district. The civic agency hopes that it will be successful in its efforts to control the growth of mosquitoes in the city. It also hopes that people will also give it support in its efforts.
It has started this campaign before monsoon as a lot of mosquitoes breed due to stagnating water. These varieties of fish are being given to people free of cost. These breeds will be released in various water bodies where stagnant water is present.
