Government Fails to Meet its Set Target

The last Government had decided to produce 10% of electricity from the renewable sources of energy like wind, solar and wave etc., by the year 2010. However, the National Audit Office has reported that the Government will not be able to meet its target, which they had set in the year 2000.

Even though, energy Companies were granted £265 million from the Government in order to develop the new technologies, still the Government failed to meet the target. The Government is being doubted to meet a legitimate EU target to produce 15% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020.

According to the latest data of 2008, the percentage of energy obtained from renewable resources is only 5.5. Amyas Morse, Head of the NAO has pointed out that the Government should emphasize more on renewable energy in order to meet the set target of year 2020. He was still hopeful that target for 2020 can be achieved.

Environmental groups are also disappointed from the performance of the Government, as the public has also been favoring the renewable resources and supporting the Government .The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said that UK is on schedule to achieve the target of climate change, which also includes the objectives to cut the emission of greenhouse gas by 34% by the year 2020. According to the latest reports, only 28% of greenhouse gas has been cut by U. K since 1990.
