On Thursday, there was a commemoration of 10th anniversary of a program called "Roots of Empathy" in Vancouver. The program focuses on increasing the emotional knowledge among children. It accomplishes its goal by making children interact with the babies.
Many babies and toddlers attended the event.
A support worker for children with special needs at Nootka Elementary, Heather Hooton, revealed that she was very enthusiastic about volunteering her 10 month old daughter for the program. She further added that she was aware of the advantages of the program. She was glad to make the kids a part of her daughter's life.
Many schools and classrooms opt for this program. In this program, a baby along with a trained facilitator, come to the schools for 27 sessions. Each session is for duration of 30 to 45 minutes. During this time, the students participate in different activities that are focused on stimulating their heart and mind.
The children learn about the emotions of the baby. Also, they are given knowledge of words through which they can express the emotions. The activities also include measuring the baby.
When children observe the baby's struggle to reach a toy they learn to think about their own annoyance during such situations.
