Himalayan Regions Witness Serious Effect of Changing Climate; Study

A study has revealed that the five chief river basins in the Himalayas will be horribly affected by the region’s melting glaciers. This changing flow of melt water is visibly due to global warming and it is now all set to have severe impact on the food security in several areas.

Despite the above statement, the study also revealed that in the rest parts of the world, there would be, rather an increase in the food productivity. In the regions affected, the endangered food security is 4.5% of 1.4bn people.

On the water from Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Yangtze and Yellow Rivers depends over 1.4bn people. The team from Netherlands quipped, “We show that melt water is extremely important in the Indus basin and important for the Brahmaputra basin, but only plays a modest role for the Ganges, Yangtze and Yellow rivers”.

For a projected population of 60 million people, the food security in danger due to the vulnerable decrease of the flow in the Brahmaputra and Indus basins. The mountains, as per the researchers, are regarded to as “water towers of the world”.

As per the natural hydraulic process, the melting down of snow and glacier is vital for the smooth cycle of environment. But now, due to the alterations in temperature and precipitation, these melt traits are being gravely affected.
