The Health Ministry is rotating the results of a study that could have grave health insinuations for Mapua and the remaining of New Zealand, says Green Party Toxics Spokeswoman, Catherine Delahunty.
In March, the Ministry of Health issued a paper dubbed the Assessment of Public Health Risk from the remediation of the previous Fruitgrowers Chemical Company site, Mapua, Nelson that worked out a law for coping with any public health issues.
Ms. Delahunty said that the report admitted that there might be health problems but, since no reports were being kept and careless reporting methods, the ministry goes on to spin the facts.
She said that it is incorrect for the Health Ministry to say that it is not likely that there will be any long-range health consequences.
Ms. Delahunty said that they do not know owing to unsuccessful and unreal screening of the Mapua site.
She said, "What we do know is that toxins are present in Mapua – dioxins, organochlorines, heavy metals and mercury ... all pose massive public health risks in any concentration".
Catherine said that the health support provided by the ministry was a good move in the right path, but did not attend to the real subject of public health or extensive problems of sanitization of toxic locations around New Zealand.
