Mad Cow Disease Can be Detected with Cattle’s Eyes

A recent study has discovered that a cattle’s eye can be the window to the mad cow syndrome, just as the human’s eyes are a window to the soul. This is possible, as the agent that causes this disease can be identified by a cattle’s eyes, thereby, acting like a long-sought test for it.

This can help to prohibit the disease to spread into the food supply if the infected cattle are recognized. This research has been done at the Iowa State University’s Department of Chemistry by Dr. Jacob Petrich and his colleagues.

Also, they have said that this research can be really promising in future, which is simply based on the assessments of the eye that is exposed to the neurological turmoil in animals. This is significant also, as it is a low-priced and immediate finding of prion diseases.

Prions are the infection in cows whose meat we eat. This brings the mad cow illness in humans, which is also accompanied with atypical proteins that can cause serious brain disorders.

“Our investigations, which have focused on scrapie-positive and scrapie-negative sheep, suggest that the retina is a most promising part of the eye for revealing spectroscopic signatures indicative of neurological disease”, the scientists wrote in the journal Analytical Chemistry.
