New York - John Travolta and his family held a private funeral service Thursday for his 16-year-old son, Jett, who died Friday after suffering a seizure while on holiday in the Bahamas.
No details were available about the ceremony, which was held at Travolta's luxury home in Ocala, Florida. The home is in an exclusive aviation community that features a private runway large enough for commercial jetliners and private taxiways to each home. Though paparazzi stood outside the entrance gate, there was no way to see whether any celebrity guests flew into the airstrip.
An autopsy conducted earlier in the week found that Jett Travolta had died by "seizure disorder." Following the autopsy, his body was cremated. The results increased speculation over whether Travolta's Scientology beliefs had contributed to the incident by discouraging the use of appropriate medication.
Travolta's friend and fellow Scientology adherent Tom Cruise on Thursday denied that could be the case.
"That's just not true. It's actually false. They say 'Get your physical, get your medication, get your physical illnesses handled,'" Cruise said, in interview with The View television show.
Cruise described Jett's death as "horrific." He called Travolta and his wife "doting parents, they're wonderful people."
US reports said that the funeral was to be conducted in accordance with Scientology practice, which celebrates the deceased's life and subscribe to the belief that the soul returns in a different body. (dpa)
