Qantas finds new CFO in Gareth Evans

Qantas Airways Ltd, the largest carrier in Australia, has found its new chief financial officer in Gareth Evans. Mr. Evans is working with the company for the past 11 years.

Mr. Evans will replace Colin Storrie who reigned from the post of CFO in March on personal and health reasons.

"Gareth was appointed after a search process that considered a very strong internal and external field," said Alan Joyce, chief executive officer of Qantas.

Sydney based Qantas said in a statement today that Mr. Evans will now look after finances for all business units of the company. Qantas said that it decided to choose the new CFO internally rather than an external hire because of the specialized nature of the work.

Till now Mr. Evans was having the responsibility for only the Qantas airline division. Mr. Evans is also a director on the board of the Qantas-majority owned travel retailer Jetset Travelworld. Gareth Evans first joined Qantas in the year 1999.

Before that he had hold various finance roles in Caltex Australia Ltd. and KPMG in the U.K.

Simon Hickey, head of Qantas's loyalty program, was the other leading candidate for the CFO role.
