Cancers of Various Kinds Crippled Finns

The type of cancer that is most common in Finland is lung cancer. In the year 2008, almost 2,000 Finns lost their lives to the ailment. On the other hand, breast cancer and prostate cancer are the cancer types that most commonly affect the Finns.

Taking a look at the number, roughly two years back, more than 2,300 Finns were diagnosed with lung cancer. Almost 2,000 of them have died from the disease.

In the meantime, 4,340 people were diagnosed with breast cancer. Almost 820 of them yielded to the disease.

The number of women who are seen to be affected with lung cancer is on the rise. Satu Lipponen, the Communications Director of the Finnish Cancer Organization, says this is chiefly because of an increase in the female smokers.

For men, the most widespread cancers are prostate cancer followed by lung cancer and colon cancer. For women, breast cancer, colon cancer and uterine cancer are the most common ones.

In the interim, fewer people are falling ill with cancers of the cervix and stomach.

Lipponen says that further more number of people will be diagnosed with cancer as the population ages. At present, approximately 215,000 Finns have fought the disease at some point in their lives.

A total of 27,609 Finns were diagnosed with cancer in 2008. In 2007, the number was 26,167.
