90% of Stroke Cases Are Preventable

A study by Canadian researchers has suggested that 90% of the risk of stroke can be prevented by lifestyle changes. It was found that high blood pressure apart from nine other risk factors is mainly related to the risk of having a stroke.

Researchers analyzed the data from 3,000 stroke patients and 3,000 controls without stroke, which were of the same age and gender from 22 countries globally , from the years between March 2007 to April 2010. It was confirmed that these ten risk factors are mainly associated with 90% of the stroke cases.

It was pointed that this could be avoided by making life style adjustments like increasing physical activity and eating a healthy diet and also, by reducing blood pressure and smoking.

It was claimed that having high blood pressure can increase the risk of having a stroke by almost 3 times.

Researchers have stressed that a stroke is not only a physical but also a psychological problem. After a stroke, a lot of change is witnessed in the brain and the way it functions.

It has been revealed that reducing high blood pressure can significantly reduce the incidence of a stroke. But medical experts are alarmed that increasingly young people are falling prey to strokes. The increase in obesity and blood pressure is leading to increased strokes in the young people.
