Ferry travelers will soon have access to the Web, whilst gliding through the waters of Active Pass.
BC Ferries says that it will introduce wireless Internet service on few of its ships next month, in order to offer free internet access for those who have to put up with Internet withdrawal during the one-and-a-half hour journey from Victoria to the mainland.
Deborah Marshall, BC Ferries Spokeswoman said, "We'll be piloting it on the Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay run as well as at those two terminals".
Marshall said that if it is a success, they will stretch it to the two additional mainland-Vancouver Island courses and the connected terminals in Nanaimo, Duke Point and Horseshoe Bay.
The ferry Company is keeping quiet on the specifications like what type of technology has been chosen, till an official announcement next month.
Marshall said that it has taken ferries employees about two years to get the design from the sketch board to actuality, owing to the intricacy involved in sustaining a stable data connection on a moving ship.
Some portions of the route are also difficult for mobilephone reception.
Marshall added that the service will be free of cost; however, the travelers will not have access to streaming audio or video on the ferry Wi-Fi network, so as to save bandwidth.
