For the First Time in U.K.: Scottish Hosp. to Use Robots for Services

A Scottish hospital is set to become the first of its kind in UK to make use of robots that will clean, deliver food and hand out drugs or medicines.

The Forth Valley Royal Hospital's armada of bots will as well be taking out clinical waste and cleaning operation theatres when the new £300m Stirlingshire hospital opens in August.

The robot squadron will move all around the hospital with the help their dedicated network of passageways that will be set beneath the hospital. Employees will make use of hand-held PDA's to make a call to the machines, so as to move food trays or bed sheets.

A BBC reporter who has seen the machines functioning describes that the cleaning and porter robots look like a forklift truck with a revolving laser ray, which it uses to search its way around the place.

The lasers help them locate and tell the place they are in. Sensors open the doors for them, and as well help them, detect hurdles or people, if any, coming in between their way.

The robot squad is undergoing final tests. At least one human will available in case of any emergency breakdown if happens, while a robot is functioning.
