Wait Time in Hospitals Still Not Acceptable, Alliance Reports

It has been revealed by a group that jots down the time period for getting the medical care in Canada that there is a "black hole" of data, regarding the waiting times for procedures in the places, outside five identified priority areas.

The report card of the Wait Time Alliance was released on Thursday. The reports stated that the information is either scarce or non-existent and in some cases, where it is found, half of the patients waited longer than it is medically adequate.

Also, alliance recorded improvement in five precedence areas including heart bypass surgery, imaging, hip and knee replacements, cataract surgery and cancer care.

For this report, the alliance also collected the date on pediatric surgery, and concluded that 73% were operated within an established landmark acceptable time. The score for the same was given "B".

Also, 17,000 or more children waited longer for their surgery last year and this timing exceeded the medically recommended limit, as delay in surgeries of the children can affect them for a life time.

The departmental surgeries of ophthalmology and dentistry were given a “D” for the waiting times.

Dr. Lorne Bellan, Co-Head of the Wait Time Alliance suggested that it is high time the Government should start working harder to reduce the wait times and the inconvenience of patients, resultantly.
