PC gaming’s GPU-kingpin, Nvidia appears to have revived the almost totally written-off aspect of 3D technology – it has released a pair of funky wireless shutter 3D glasses!
GeForce 3D Vision glasses are somewhat like Ali G’s yellow-tinted scan-ware, the apparent difference being the thicker rims and arms and more angular corners. These
3D glasses charge off a USB port but sync wirelessly with the PC, through infrared.
A battery-powered, active stereoscopic technology has been used to give the GeForce 3D Vision glasses their 3D effect at 60 FPS.
According to CNET, commenting on the use and effect of the Nvidia glasses, “The visual effect is more than simply cheap Hollywood-style 3D flash. They give sense of a much more immersive depth of field than the standard 3D games on a 2D display.”
Priced more on the expensive side, at $200, other main drawback related to the use of the glasses is the additional requirement of a monitor or TV with a 120Hz refresh rate over dual-link DVI – which obviously means extra cost.
Given the present state of the economy, the full-package cost could be a restraining factor even for technology enthusiasts. As AnnadTech has aptly put it, “Nvidia has a very good active shutter stereoscopic solution with GeForce 3D Vision, but the problem is that its value is still very dependent on the applications the end user wants it for.”
