Obama’s Health Reform Funding

The system would be paying the costs of health care reform, says President Obama.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Obama Health Care reform is like a gift one can keep on taking but not always in a good way. There are so many different provisions stuffed into that huge law.

The proposal, which is funded by the lately ratified health care reform law, provides $250 million to augment the nation's supply of primary care health professionals; $168 million will go toward creating more placement slots to train more than 500 new primary care physicians during the next five years.

AAFP President, Lori Heim, M. D., of Vass, N. C remarked "I think this reflects what we have said all along -- that this administration is solidly behind primary care, and that they understand that primary care and family medicine have to be the cornerstone of the health care system”.

The initiative also sets to the side $5 million for states to map and execute policies to enlarge their primary care workforces by 10% to 25% during the next 10 years to meet the increased order for primary care services. It provides another $32 million to train more than 600 new physician assistants, and gives $30 million to help more than 600 nursing students be present at school full time, so they can receive their nursing degrees faster.

While the investments were being announced, HHS was indistinct in spelling out just how the money would be used to strengthen the nation's primary care workforce.
