Scientists are in the process of assessing a new drug being trailed on cancerous tumors that may or may not be able to treat Tasmanian devils.
Tasmania's Department of Primary Industries principal Veterinary Pathologist, Dr. Stephen Pyecroft is of the opinion that he has had first round of discussions with a corporation named as, Ecobiotics.
The Company has been able to develop a drug, which is being used to treat facial tumors in some domestic animals.
However, Dr. Pyecroft says the devil facial tumor is not a mere laceration on the skin.
The trouble with devil facial tumor is that once these cutaneous legions or skin legions come up, then the disease seems to metastasise predominantly rapidly and this product from this information is not actually calculated to do that kind of metastatic treatment.
Dr. Pyecroft says that bringing in use of drugs to treat the devil facial tumor disease would be next to impractical in the wild.
He says that treating individual animals is not the chief focus of the disease agenda but to control it in the wild.
Dr. Pyecroft says the scuffle against the devil facial tumor disease ought to keep its focus on breaking the link of transmission series.
