Cooperatively raising $9.2 million for cancer research, more than 2,000 cyclists took part in the BC Cancer Foundation's Ride to overcome Cancer.
The cyclists set off from Guildford Town Centre in Surrey at 7 a.m. on Saturday and crossed the cease line in Seattle on Sunday. Each rider had to heave at least $2,500 in order to partake in the two-day, 250-km ride.
Three years ago, the fundraising event had first begun in Toronto. Last year was the first time the Ride to Conquer Cancer took place in Vancouver to benefit the BC Cancer Foundation. It attracted just over 1,700 cyclists who rose over $7 million. All funds raised go directly into research programs and patient care.
Dr. Kim Chi, a medical oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency's Vancouver Centre and two-time Ride to Conquer Cancer participant said, "The Ride to Conquer Cancer funds make an amazing difference. Ride money will accelerate our work to bring new and more effective treatments to patients faster and to expand clinical research and clinical trials”.
