Very deservedly, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, an Indie sleeper has gone on to win not only the Best Film award, but also the Best Director (Danny Boyle), Best Writer (Simon Beaufoy), Best Composer (A. R. RAhman) and Best Young Actor (Dev Patel) awards.
A drama film set in the Indian city of Mumbai , about a young Indian man on a game show, ‘Sumdog Millionaire’ won big time Thursday evening at the 14th Annual Critics Choice Awards.
Other winners were:
1. ‘Milk’ - Best Actor and Best Ensemble for Sean Penn. His portrayal of slain gay rights activist Harvey Milk won great applause.
2. Anne Hathaway, as a troubled young woman in ‘Rachel Getting Married’ and Meryl Streep, a strict nun in ‘Doubt’, tied for the Best Actress award.
3. The Best Supporting Actor went to the late Heath Ledger as Joker, Batman’s nemesis in ‘The Dark Knight’. Kate Winslet’s performance as a former Nazi prison guard in ‘The Reader’ won her the Best Supporting Actress award.
4. Best Animated Film – ‘Wall-E’.
5. Best Action Film – ‘The Dark Knight’.
6. Best Comedy – ‘Tropic Thunder’.
7. Best Foreign Language – Israel ’s ‘Waltz With Bashir’.
8. Best Documentary – ‘Man on Wire’.
9. Best Song ‘The Wrestler’ from the film of the same name went to the Boss – Bruce Springsteen.
10. TV film ‘John Adams’ won the Best Picture made for TV.
While, the second annual Joel Siegel award, which honours individuals from the film industry ‘whose work both on- and off-screen inspires and contributes to the good of humanity’, went to actor Richard Gere.
The Broadcast Film Critics Association awards ceremony took place at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. BFCA, the largest film critics organization has more than
200-members working in television, radio and the Internet, throughout U. S. and Canada .
