Review: ‘Rachel Getting Married’

'Rachel Getting Married' is just the bit of fluff Kate Hudson so much likes to feature in. However, this time round, she had Anne Hathaway with her, who just tied for an Oscar with Meryl Streep, for her performance in this comedy about best friends turned warring brides.

Us, who are the fairer sex, often wonder why guys like to make films that portray us as obnoxious, overbearing, crazy, pathetic basket cases. 'Rachel Getting Married' will have everyone believing that being a woman is not easy. Of course, it isn't, when on top of the obsessive, all-consuming need for a perfect wedding, we not only have to contend with the men in our lives, but also jobs, family, and friends.

Highly inconvenient, however, Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway), best female friends (BFF) since they were little slips of girls, have only dreamt one dream. Not true love or fulfilling careers, not even world peace, all they have ever dreamt of is a June wedding at the Plaza hotel, ever since the two glimpsed a wedding at the Plaza Hotel, and then spent countless hours re-creating it in Emma's attic.

When the two get engaged, they giggle, shriek, and rush away to the New York 's top event planner (Candice Bergen). Unfortunately, the Plaza has only one date open in June, which means the two BFFs will have to compromise, as to who gets the booking. It takes three screen-writers to decide whose the lucky bride, but not before forcing two talented actresses to scheme, whine and even pull each other's hair, through the film.

Last year as well, Hudson got stuck with another unforgettable romantic comedy 'Fool's Gold' and a visibly bored Matthew McConaughey. The same this year, but she had a more willing partner in the admirably committed Hathaway, with the grooms, blandly played by Chris Pratt and Steve Howey, on the sidelines and completely aware of their own insignificance.

This one is for those women, who enjoy the guilty pleasure of scanning through the pages of 'Brides' magazine. They will love the Vera Wang dresses, the Bloomsdales Bridal Registry, and not to forget the rings from Tiffany.

But ironically, Winick will have tarnished your platinum dreams with this film of two privileged Manhattanite BFFs tearing each other apart, as to who gets to have the Best Wedding ever. The film doesn't make a strong case for either womanhood or weddings, rather, it strongly pitches for a good, old-fashioned elopement.

The film is based on the dated concept of throwing away hundreds of thousands of dollars, just so you have the perfect flowers and the perfect dress to get married in. It is kind of misogynistic in these recessionary times, to assume intelligent women metamorphose into scratching cats at the sight of a Tiffany gift box. The film is nothing but superficial fluff and should never have been made, since just like Bush's administration, excessive spending is also déclassé.

However, not quite a complete disaster, Anne Hathaway, playing a schoolteacher to Kate Hudson's young lawyer Liv in this film on Bride Wars, gives as effective a performance as she did in 'The Devil Wears Prada'; which like 'Rachel Gets Married' does a balancing act of both glorifying and satirizing the wedding and beauty industries. However, The Devil Wears Prada', managed to do more effective job of the two.

But, as far as broad comedy goes, the film is no more or less silly than the latest Will Ferrell movie, delivering enough laughs as justification for some ridiculous stunts. Hudson has inherited some of mother Goldie Hawn's comedic timing, but does not have the depth Hathaway has, who does shallow comedic roles and intense dramatic turns, as well as the other.

A well paced film, the only annoying factor is Candice Bergen's halting dialogue delivery.
