EarthLink files case against Comcast, NBC merger

EarthLink, the US-based Internet service provider has shown its disagreement and unhappiness with the possible merger of Comcast Corp and NBC Universal.

As a matter of fact the company has also filed a petition with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) asking them to stop the possible amalgamation.

Both Comcast and NBC are in the business of providing cable network services. NBC is now owned by General Electrics that has majority stake as well as the controlling power in the company.

The reason cited by EarthLink for its steps is that the merger will lead to anti-competitive practices develop in the industry as a while and this will also have an impact on its own Internet sector as well. No comment on the issue was made by either Comcast or NBC.

The case by EarthLink comes a month after the government took steps to make the high-speed Internet sector more regulated than it is now. Obviously, this has provided the stage for the possible showdown between the big players of the industry and the authorities.

Comcast, which is under the process of possible JV with NBC, worth $30 billion, has stood against the moves taken by FCC.
