The first batch of prisoners has completed their course from Otago Corrections Facility (OCF) today. The prisoners were reportedly undertaking a course called Drug Treatment Unit (DTU) program.

Jack Harrison, the Prison Manager revealed that the Minister for Corrections had officially inaugurated the unit yesterday. However, he said that the first intake of prisoners began in the month of March.

He disclosed that the prisoners have devoted the past 12 weeks in acquiring the essential tools, which could bring a tremendous change in their lives. He also told that at the time of construction of the new building the prisoners were in make shift facilities. He was optimistic that the changes made by prisoners will be everlasting.

According to Mr. Harrison the DTU is an indispensable part of the rehabilitation measures of the prison. He is happy that they are able to provide an exhaustive program for the prisoners, who are serving short sentences. He said that it will also be instrumental in reducing the chances of their committing any further crimes and eventually, it will make the society safer.

Prisoners, who had gone for this program, had some addiction, which was one of the reasons for their committing the offence.
