28M Boxes of Breakfast Cereals Recalled by Kellogg

Kellogg Co., which is the leading U.S. breakfast cereal maker, willingly recalled almost 28 million boxes of cereal that includes Froot Loops and Honey Smacks, citing odd taste and an odor coming from the liner of packages. The recall too, comprises of batches of Apple Jacks and Corn Pops, Kellogg said today in a declaration. While the potential for serious health problems is small, a few consumers have experienced provisional symptoms including nausea and diarrhea, Kellogg said.

We have been able to recognize a substance in the package liner that can generate an unusual wax-like off taste and smell, J. Adaire Putnam, a Company Spokesperson, said in an e-mail. She added that the chemistry panel is trying to work on isolating the exact substance.

The Battle Creek, Michigan-based Company relied on cereal for 51% of total sales in 2009, according to Bloomberg information. Putnam said it is untimely to give a remark on whether income might be affected, as Kellogg is in the process of assessing the circumstances.

Kellogg fell 44 cents to $52.42 at 4:20 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have dropped by 1.5%, this year.

The recalled boxes were made at an Omaha, Nebraska Facility, Putnam said, declining to offer its manufacture capacity. She also, declined to reveal how many packages of cereal, the Company produces each year.
