In what the police have called a gang-related drive-by attack, five men were shot outside Dunbar High School, Friday night, on the South Side of Chicago. As a result of panic after the firing, the spectators left the crowded high school basketball game, and the students ran into a snowy street.
WGN reported that when the gunshots were fired outside the school building, a basketball game underway was in double overtime. Some students who had grown tired were in the process of leaving the building.
One freshman at the school told WGN that a silver truck pulled up to a nearby bus stop; people inside it first pretending to fire a gun and then "they really started shooting."
The five wounded men were taken to area hospitals, where three are in serious condition and two are critical. The victims were not characterized beyond gender, and the police spokeswoman, Monique Bond, refused to comment on whether they had attended the basketball game. All she said was that they young people, "not necessarily students."
According to Jody Weis, the Chicago Police Superintendent, though two hundred officers in the area are looking for suspects and pursuing several leads, no one has yet been identified or arrested. In Weis' opinion, the shooting was "isolated" and appeared to be gang-related.
A couple of hours after the shooting, a police spokeswoman said at a news conference that the members of the Chicago Police Department's gang unit were probing the shooting incident because of indications about the involvement of gangs.

Bullet Proof backpack
I just read this story and with all the concern about school shootings I wanted to pass on something I bought not only for myself who travels but I also bought one for my niece and nephew. A company in Boston called MJ Safety Solutions makes a bullet proof backpack called the my Childs pack.
I originally wasn’t sold on the idea but with all the stories I have been reading about with swat teams practicing in schools this is obviously a real problem these days and decided to take a proactive measure with my sisters kids. I don’t know if anyone has had to use one of these bullet proof backpacks yet but if it saves one person the guys in Boston did a good thing.
