According to a report, Sydney's Taronga Zoo will open a new breeding center for Tasmanian devils, so that they do not become extinct.
These marsupials are in a danger of extinction, due to an unusual communicable cancer, which results in tumors on their faces.
These tumors cause hindrance in feeding. As a result some animals affected with the disease, are not eating anything.
NSW Environment Minister, Frank Sartor, disclosed that if adequate treatment is not discovered then the animals will become extinct in the coming 25 to 30 years. He revealed in a statement, that 60% of the black furred animals in the region have died due to the disease.
He further added that the health of the ecosystem depends on their survival.
Another identical program was started in the year 2008. 24 Tasmanian devils were born in Taronga and Taronga Western Plains zoos, due to the breeding program.
An outdoor classroom is also present at the centre which brings to light the problems that the devils face in the wild habitat.
Taronga CEO Cameron Kerr is of the view that the modern exhibit will assist visitors in knowing more about how their survival is at risk due to the cancer.
