Mental health experts in South Australia will be able to intervene quickly to help out patients under new laws.

Minster of Health and Substance Abuse, John Hill said that improvements in the Mental Health Act, which came into effect on Thursday, will now help patients, carers and families to have better negotiations with mental health expert’s families.

Medical information is now available for Carers and special treatments are available for children with mental health issues.

"Her role is to make sure that the rights of people accessing mental health services in South Australia are protected and to monitor the use of the act so she's the kind of in-house advocate if you like for mental health patients", said Mr. Hill.

Mr. Hill also said that Dr. Honeyman will have a very important role in the new changes.

The human rights of people with mental sickness in the country will soon get an inclusive legal safeguard.

Additional Secretary of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Keshav Desiraju said that after broad public conferences, the draft envisaging modifications in the present Mental Health Act (MHA) 1987, will be prepared in six months.

Desiraju came into the city for first provincial consultation on proposed amendments in the Act, which was held at Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration on Wednesday.
