A warning has been issued by The Canadian Avalanche Center to people heading for the B.C./Alberta backcountry this weekend. Heavy snow has been reported on both sides of the provincial border. It is expected that heavy snowfall would follow in the coming days as well.
According to Karl Klassen, an avalanche forecaster with the CAC, this season the snowfall is really treacherous.
Eleven avalanche deaths have been reported in the B.C. backcountry over the past several weeks. There is risk of more avalanches in the high ski resorts. The resorts are trying to keep visitors in their boundaries for security purposes.
Ski patroller Richard Wynes says, "The best thing to do is avoid it in the first place and often we can avoid it."
Richard has been patrolling the mountains regularly and he says that for the last two weeks there has been moving snow on them. Information tents have been pitched in recreation areas to offer survival tips and demonstrations to the tourists about what to do in case of a slide.
The warning indicates that some areas of the resort may shut down to public at all times.
