US cracks down online film piracy

The officials of US have shut down nine websites which are accused of giving free access to films including the new film Toy Story 3.

Some of the films were available on the websites just hours after their release in the cinema halls. This crackdown of the film piracy included seizing assets from at least 15 bank accounts, involved police, customs and even the film industry.

This closure of the websites was described as the biggest takedown of the illegal movies and TV websites in a single action taken by the government.

As per sources, the websites had 6.7 million combined visitors per month. The previous crackdown on film piracy was based on the pirated DVDs but now government has taken action against them.

Search warrants were issued in New York, Washington, North Carolina and New Jersey because of an investigation which involved around 100 agents in eleven different US States as well as in Netherlands. The targeted websites were providing free access to the films like Prince of Persia, Jonah Hex and Knight and Day which are still running in the theaters.
