Loma Linda University and the University of Arizona in Tucson, have come up with a joint-study report, reveals the claims that reusable shopping bags carry high concentration of bacteria.
This implies that the food material and other goods carried in these bags increase the risk of infection in the users.
The findings of the study have triggered a heavy discussion in the parliament, wherein a legislation is being framed prohibiting the use of paper or plastic shopping bags, with the aim of preserving the environment.
The American Chemical Council, the opponent of the bill who provided funds for the current study, has now substantiated its opposition with the findings.
"We took the position that if the state is going to adopt a policy, they ought to understand the unintended consequences", said Tim Shestek, Senior Director of ACC.
Meanwhile, the bill received support from Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica as well as a number of environmental activists and grocery chain owners.
The legislation was cleared in the Assembly last month. It has now been seeking the approval of Senate Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Supporters of the bill are of the view that it will reduce the expenditure on cleaning bag dumps by more than $25 million for the Californians, yearly.
