Dietary Antioxidants Aid Arteries, Say Researchers

According to the researchers at Wolfson Medical Center, Israel, dietary supplementations with antioxidants can help to keep arteries disease-free and enhance sugar and fat metabolism.

In previous studies also, Antioxidant supplements of vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and selenium have been associated with superior heart health. This new research involving 70 people strengthens the prior findings. All the patients concerned with the study had some grave health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes or low HDL cholesterol levels. Many of them were smokers as well.

The patients were arbitrarily assigned to take delivery of wither a sop or an everyday antioxidant supplement. Six months of therapy, reported an increase in the arterial elasticity index in the antioxidant group, which continued to remain in the placebo group.

With systolic BP decreasing from 145.2 to 136.1 mmHg and diastolic BP decreasing from 78.4 to 75.0 mmHg, the blood pressure witnessed a significant drop. While no changes either BP or HDL levels were pragmatic in the placebo group, HDL or good cholesterol levels also augmented in the antioxidant group.

Lead Researcher, Dr. Reuven Zimlichman said, “These benefits are noted even in presence of multiple heart risk factors like smoking and high blood pressure”.
