In France, surgeons managed to perform a full face transplant that is said to be the first and the most complex of its kind. Surgeons operated on a 35-year man, last month, in an operation that lasted for almost a day. The patient used to have disfigured skin, as a result of a tumor that spread through his tissues.
During the operation, the patient did not just have a new face, but also new eyelids and tear ducts. Now, the patient is stably recovering.
Doctor Laurent Lantieri, the leader of the surgical team in Paris, said, "My patient is doing well. He is walking, eating, talking. His beard has started to grow back on his new face".
Dr. Lantieri had performed partial face transplants prior to this complete face transplant, and he was ready for such a huge operation, but he is still afraid of rejection. The patient's body might actually reject the newly added organ.
The second fear is of infection, while, the next fear would be the psychological rejection. However, Dr. Lantieri made it clear that his patient was so happy with the results that he gave "thumps up", when he had a peek at his new face.
The psychological relapse had its own history, as in April 2006, another transplant was carried out by Chinese surgeons on a patient, who had his face mutilated by a bear. However, the patient had died less than two years later, out of trauma, for he had to take strong anti-rejection drugs, everyday.
