The Volvo S60 Concept car, unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show, is clearly a preview of the next-gen S60 production sedan to be introduced in 2010. The car exhibits a new design direction, which is an evolution of the Scandinavian brand’s signature design language.
Volvo, which is renowned for continually uplifting the art of car-making, adds bulges and curves to its vehicles, with the aim to make them appear “more organic than cubic.”
With what can be called Volvo’s first stint with the high-efficiency GTDi - Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection – technology, the S60 Concept car is a four-cylinder 1.6-litre unit, with 180 horsepower. Combining the engine with an array of technical measures, the company has worked towards cutting carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g/km.
The car’s coupe-like roofline and elegant front end flaunt Volvo’s largest version, and its other cool exterior details. But, what is breathtakingly beautiful is the car’s interior – the hand-made floating center stack of Orrefors crystal!
In addition to other features, the S60 Concept also offers a revolutionary safety innovation, with breaks that get activated automatically in case the driver cannot respond quickly enough to sudden danger.
According to Stephen Odell, Volvo Cars’ President and CEO, “The sporty design gives visual promise of an enthusiastic drive and I can assure you here and now that the all-new S60 will live up to that promise. The driving properties are better than in any previous Volvo. The car’s technology will also help you to be a better and safer driver.”
