Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, will be announcing the abolition of the Food Standards Agency today, passing on the authorized duties to the Environment department.
With this, the agency officials are complaining that the Government has been unnecessarily interfering with their works.
As per the changes issued, Lansley will be reallocating the different duties and services of the agency, which include safety and hygiene to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
All of FSA’s responsibilities for nourishment, diet and public health will be integrated into the Department of Health.
Andrew Burnham, Labour's health Spokesman, said, "Getting rid of the FSA is the latest in a number of worrying steps that show Andrew Lansley caving in to the food industry”.
He pointed out that whether the health secretary will be able to stay loyal with the expectations and duties in safeguarding the public health.
Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum said that the Government’s decision of doing away with operation of the FSA is absolutely baseless. The agency played a vital role in the betterment of the foodstuff quality in Britain.
He added that the move is based on the political moves of the old Conservative party.
