India Launches First Domestic H1N1 Vaccine on Monday

The pharmaceutical industry saw a revelation on Monday with the launch of the first domestic intra-nasal vaccine for the treatment of those infected with the H1N1 virus.

The launch was observed in Mumbai, after the trial of the vaccine on the virus-infected mice was concluded.

The researchers said that the recommencing of the swine flu tensions in India has paved way for the development of a common vaccine which can be administered any types of strains in the disease.

The vaccine developed currently, called Nasovac, which is to be injected straight into the nasal cavity, is expected to save the patient against the infection of the H1N1 virus for at least one year.

However, the vaccine doesn’t have the capability of bringing any relief to the most vulnerable section of the people including pregnant women, infants and people with weak immunity.

"The nasal vaccine is safe and easy to administer and meant for children over three years of age and for the elderly", said Adar C Poonawalla, SII Executive Director.

In May 2009, as many as 1,000 people in India were killed when the swine flu pandemic hit the nation, for the first time.
