Pierce plays Superman, rescues Celtics in OT

Pierce plays Superman, rescues Celtics in OTLos Angeles - To Kevin Garnett, teammate Paul Pierce was Superman on Monday night, though the Boston Celtics' captain didn't wear a cape, fly through the air or need any extraordinary powers to rescue the reigning NBA Champions.

Pierce poured in nine of his season-high 39 points in overtime, carrying the Celtics past the visiting Toronto Raptors for the second time in as many days, 115-109 and a sweep of the four-game season series.

"It's basic basketball," said Pierce, who played 49 minutes on a sore right knee. "I had a good rhythm going and the guys were looking for me."

"Y'all need to play some of that Superman music in the building when he's scoring like that," said Garnett, who tried to hum the theme song to reporters during the post-game conference with Pierce sitting at his side.

"He was 13-for-26 with 39 points, nine rebounds and four assists. That was Superman. This is Clark Kent, right here, aka Paul Pierce."

Garnett had 20 points with 12 rebounds, Ray Allen scored 12, while Brian Scalabrine added 11 off the bench for the Celtics (31-9) who beat the Raptors 94-88 at Toronto on Sunday to stop a four-game slide.

"To win back-to-back games during the regular season, historically is a split," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "It's like playing a doubleheader. We won them both, so I'll take them."

The Celtics appeared to have the game won in regulation after Pierce split a pair of free throws with 15.6 seconds left for a 96-93 advantage. However, they failed to coral Anthony Parker's missed three-pointer.

Instead, the Raptors recovered the ball, and Italian sharpshooter Andrea Bargnani buried the game-tying triple from the left wing with one tick remaining to send the game into overtime, when Boston's Rajon Rondo missed an alley oop layup attempt at the buzzer.

Pierce started the extra five-minute session with a three-pointer and a wide-open jumper, around a basket by Parker at the other end, putting the Celtics ahead 98-95.

Leading 103-99, Pierce drove the left side and was met by three defenders. However, he found Leon Powe underneath for a layup to open up a five-point edge. Garnett and Pierce alternated making four free throws apiece as the Celtics stayed in front en route to a franchise record 22 points in the overtime.

"We made plays down the stretch," Pierce said. "We knew what we wanted to do. We didn't turn the ball over. We got the ball to the players who were supposed to get it and we executed."

Bargnani topped Toronto (16-23) with 23 points, while Chris Bosh finished with 18 and 11 rebounds.

Elsewhere: New York Knicks 101, New Orleans Hornets 95 David Lee scored 24 points, Al Harrington had 20, including the game-sealing three-pointer with 26.8 seconds left, and the Knicks (14-22) held off the host Hornets to stop a three-game skid.

David West had 25 points and 14 rebounds, while Chris Paul added 23 points for New Orleans (22-12) which trimmed a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to three before Harrington's dagger.

Utah Jazz 120, Indiana Pacers 113 Turkey's Mehmet Okur erupted for a career-high 43 points, and the Jazz held off a late charge to edge the visiting Pacers, for their fourth straight victory.

Russian Andrei Kirilenko scored 23 points with 12 rebounds, while Deron Williams also had 23 and handed out 11 assists for Utah (23-15) which nearly blew a 20-point third-quarter cushion.

Danny Granger scored 30 points, and Mike Dunleavy added 20 for Indiana (13-25) which lost its third in a row.

New Jersey Nets 103, Oklahoma City Thunder 99 (OT) Rookie centre Brook Lopez had a career-high 31 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Nets to their fourth straight home win.

Kevin Durant led league-worst Oklahoma City (6-33) with 26 points while rookie Russell Westbrook chipped in with 17

Milwaukee Bucks 97, Wizards 91 Michael Redd scored 29 points, including a key three-pointer with 1:20 left, while Australian Andrew Bogut had 18 with 10 boards as the visiting Bucks handed the Wizards their fifth straight loss.

Nick Young topped Eastern Conference-worst Washington (7-20) with a career-high 30 points and Antawn Jamison had 25.

Portland Trail Blazers 109, Chicago Bulls 95 Travis Outlaw tallied a season-high 33 points, Greg Oden had 17 with 13 rebounds, and the Trail Blazers ran past the host Bulls en route to their third straight victory.

Drew Gooden had 22 points and Ben Gordon added 17 for Chicago (16-22) which welcomed back Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich.

Deng, sidelined the last eight games with a sprained left ankle scored 14. Meanwhile, Hinrich finished with four points, after missing 31 games with torn ligaments in his right thumb. (dpa)
