Canada's Supreme Court has confirmed that it will not be hearing an appeal from a British Columbia man, who feels that it is unfair that he is being charged for a prostate screening test.
Laurence Armstrong stressed that it is unfair that he had to pay $30 for a prostate specific antigen test or PSA test for screening of prostate cancer, while women are provided with free cancer-detection tests.
He termed it unfair that women even if they do not suffer from any symptoms or any illness can get free cancer screening for cervical and breast cancer, while they are between 40 to 70 years old. He stressed that men should also get free screening tests for cancer.
He was ordered to undergo a screening test for cancer by his doctor as he was over the age of 40.
A Court of Appeal for British Columbia also reinstated an earlier ruling by a human rights tribunal that had also dismissed the appeal filed by Laurence Armstrong. The tribunal had given its ruling that Laurence had failed to establish a case of discrimination through his appeal.
Health experts stress that prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death in men. It is mainly caused by a high fat diet. Medical experts feel that western diets which are full of fats also contribute to an increase in prostate cancer cases.
