Kitchen Spoons Can Lead to Dispensing Mis-Dosing

Be cautious while giving your children medicinal doses by using spoon. A new study has revealed that the use of kitchen spoons to dole out medicine to children can lead to perilous overdoses or under-doses. The size of the spoon is responsible for the same.

The mis-dosing can lead to the advent of antimicrobial resistance.

In the study, 71 teaspoons and 49 tablespoons were gathered by the Researchers from Greece and Boston. The spoons were collected from the households in the Attica region of Greece. It was found that the size of the spoons varied significantly.

Matthew E. Falagas, MD, DSc, Director of the Alfa Institute of Biomedical Sciences in Athens, Greece stated that the examined spoons showed considerable variations in their sizes and they didn't match the standardize spoons that are given along with many medicines. The households, which are using big teaspoons, are giving their child an overdose of 192%.

The findings suggest the parents to use standardized medicine spoons or oral syringes to give liquid medicines to their children.

According to Falagas, children get easily attacked to over doses, so care must be taken while giving them medicines. There are affordable and easy to use oral syringes available in the market that can dole out correct dosage.
