Prolonged Mobile Usage Elevates Tinnitus Risk: Study

A new research has claimed that consistent usage of mobile phones can lead to the onset of a chronic disorder called tinnitus, in the users.

A person affected with tinnitus feels or hears a constant ringing or a vibration sound in the ear, told the Austrian researchers.

The team examined as many as 100 individuals showing signs of tinnitus and nearly 100 free from any ailments.

The team conducted a comparative analysis of the mobile usage in the two groups. They found that the likelihood of developing tinnitus was 70% in those using the mobile for at least 10 minutes in a day.

The researchers claimed that lengthened contact with the microwave radiation oozing out of the mobile phones is one of the possible factors, responsible for the generation of the disorder.

The study appeared in Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal.

However, the justifications produced by the Austrian researchers have been contradicted by British Tinnitus Association, which said that no scientific or medical justifications have been found, as yet, which can show a link.

"The association between tinnitus and electromagnetic fields is not a new idea with electromagnetic fields being put forward”, said Veronica Kennedy, a consultant and adviser to the British Tinnitus Association.
