DVA to Announce Policy on Medical Use of Marijuana

Department of Veterans Affairs has planned to proclaim that the patients receiving treatment at hospitals and clinics under its affiliation will now be recommended the use of medical marijuana in those states where it has been legalized.

The decision will do away with the long endured fight between the officials over permitting the use of medical Marijuana, between the 14 states which allow its use and the remaining of the states which follow the federal law banning its use.

The policy, which is going to be unveiled by the department next week, will disallow the patients for using the pain relief drugs in case they are caught using the illegitimate drugs.

The veterans are of the opinion that the prescription of medical Marijuana by the doctors despite observing a ban on it has aroused a sense of distrust among the patients.

“When states start legalizing marijuana we are put in a bit of a unique position because as a federal agency, we are beholden to federal law”, said Dr. Robert Jesse.

He is The Principal Deputy Under Secretary for health in the veterans department.

The policy will be applicable only in the states where it has been legalized.
