The Shiv Sena has taken this initiative of directing party workers to visit construction sites to make it sure that the migrant laborers who are suffering from malaria have an access to effective treatment. The party workers will also look into it whether builders are adopting measures against the breeding of mosquitoes.
In about 2,500 construction sites in Mumbai, only 2% have taken steps to control malaria. Wealth cards will be issued to about three lakh laborers from August 1 by the State Government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. This initiative will keep a check on their health, as blood tests will be conducted for malaria every 15 days.
BMC Executive Health Officer Dr GT Ambe said, "If the mosquitoes bite those afflicted by the disease first and then bite others, then the disease can be transmitted".
He added that the laborers' health will be their primary concern, and they will get a treatment when they will fall sick. The main carriers of the disease are migrants from Malaria-endemic states like Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, as per the doctors and civic officials.
All the party shakhas along with its 84 corporators have been directed by the Executive President, Uddhav Thackeray to pay a visit at the construction sites.
