No Worries for Heart Patients during Air Travel: Study

A report issued by the British Cardiovascular Society has stated that there is no risk for heart patients to go in for air travel. This report dubbed as Fitness to fly for passengers with cardiovascular disease has presented that there are very few severe cases, in which a patient should not fly.

Before this report, many reports had warned that air travel poses a risk for heart patients, since blood clotting may lead to lung failure and heart attack, as well. The report has said that there are chances of clot forming in long air journeys, as people have to sit still for very long durations.

"For those with cardiovascular disease who are not critically ill but who wish to fly on commercial aircraft, the aircraft environment does not pose a significant threat to their health”, said the report.

According to David Smith from the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust that a heart patient should get proper check-ups done before flying, then it’s not a problem. He said that most of the time it depends upon the situation of the disease whether it is stable or not.

He said that patients should be regular about their medicines and diet plans.

The report was published in the Journal Medical Heart.
