The obesity, spreading out among humans, is apparently reaching to their pets, according to the study carried out on 30,000 dogs around the U.K., tracking the weight rate of dogs during the past 4 years.
The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), a charity veterinary, published a report showing that the dog’s waist lines are disturbingly increasing. The PDSA’s report also included statistics that 1/3 of the U.K.’s dogs are overweight.
Sean Wensley, Senior Veterinary Surgeon, warned that overweight pets are more susceptible to diseases, and blamed the owners for failing to take care of their pets, their exercising and their diet. However, he added that the owners should work on restoring their pet’s physique. The vet said, “The good news is it's never too late to achieve positive change with their veterinary practice".
As a contribution in the program of retaining the dogs’ fitness and health, PDSA is arranging a pet slimming competition, called The Pet Fit Club, which is PDSA’s widely-known annual event. This event is a 6-month free program, during which the pets are enlisted to take part in a strict dietary and fitness exercising.
Dr. Alex German, a leading Animal-Obesity Specialist, at the University of Liverpool Veterinary School, praised the work of the PDSA in the field of containing the increase in pet obesity.
