Mexicans May Migrate to U.S., If Global Warming Persists

A new study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week, which shares that by 2080; about 6.7 million Mexicans, could migrate to the U.S. due to climate change, which may decrease agricultural produce in Mexico.

There is a possibility that about 10% of the Mexican population, especially the ones who fall in age group of 15 to 65, will migrate to the U.S.

Michael Oppenheimer, the study author shared that climatic projections are correct and global warming is the root cause behind migration.

He said, “Our primary objectives were, No. 1, to give policymakers something to think about and, No. 2, to give researchers a spur to start answering some of the more complicated questions”.

He grouped up with Alan B. Krueger and Shuaizhang Feng, two eminent economists in order to study the link between a decline in agricultural and migration. They studied climatic data, crop production and Mexican migration between the years 1995 to 2005, to predict the estimates of the coming 70 years.

Farmers will surely flee to the U.S., if the temperatures kept on increasing like this.

An expert in agricultural economics at UC Davis, Philip Martin opposed the view, adding that making estimates on the basis of climate change was almost impossible, as there are many other factors, which contribute to an individual’s decision to stay in agriculture or shift.
