Postmen to Ditch Cycles in the Wake of Accidents: Royal Mail

According to a report by Royal Mail, in the year 2008-09 around 1,065 injuries have occurred among the postmen who deliver mails through bicycles.

The reason behind it is that the postmen have to carry heavy loads, which include DVDs and books. This number is 14% higher as compared to the previous year.

In the wake of these injuries, the Royal Mail has decided to employ vans or trolleys for the purpose rather than a bicycle. However, this move will result in ending the tradition that dates back to 1880.

Field Operations Director of Royal Mail, Paul Tolhurst, has disclosed that the organization is planning to ditch the sacks which are heavier than 16 kg.

Moreover, the experts are of the view that the long term use of these bicycles can lead to muscular and skeletal problems.

Henceforth, the postmen will travel in vans and will distribute the letters from the trolleys.

Tolhurst is of the view that due to the increase in parcels containing heavy materials, the alterations have become important.

He added that this is a safety measure undertaken in order to prevent any further accidents that occur due to the use of cycles on the busy roads.
