The speech made by Andrew Lansley on July 7 at annual conference of the UK Faculty of Public Health must have motivated many to take steps for healthy living.
The gist of his speech was that the public should themselves be responsible for keeping good health. He also announced that he would not introduce any new laws for the food companies to control their marketing efforts or reforming their products.
He laid emphasis on self-dependency to keep health in a good state by following healthy eating, exercising more, avoiding alcohol, etc. His speech was an outburst relating to his failed measures.
Lansley also expressed that he wants to reduce the pressure on NHS. For that matter, there is a need of change in behaviors, shift in people's relationships and altering their association with drugs, alcohol, tobacco and food.
He said, "Nearly a quarter of the deaths in this country each year result, in part at least, from the consequences of unhealthy lifestyle".
Though it was Lansley’s challenging step, it was required to make people feel responsible for their well-being. His comments were also based on Foresight report on obesity, which declared that the environmental and biological factors are making people overweight.
Lansley has a valid point in saying that Government can aid people by delivering health policies but the later has also to put in efforts to solve their problems.
