Overweight Pregnant Women at Risk of Difficult Labor: NICE

National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence is going to release a set of guidelines for controlling the tendency of growing overweight among pregnant women.

The officials said that a number of people carry this misconception that while a woman is pregnant, she eats not for one but two individuals.

The medical experts said that women who get obese during their pregnancies suffer a range of health issues, including diabetes and high blood pressure, and eventually a difficult labor.

In addition, these women are at a high risk of ending up in stillbirths or miscarriage or giving birth to abnormal babies.

But at the same time, the experts agreed that in a number of cases overweight women give birth to normal babies.

The risk of developing health ailments is higher in those pregnant women whose mass index (BMI) exceeds 30. These women are considered obese by the doctors.

As per the guidelines to be presented by NICE shortly, the GPs will be suggested to keep their patients aware of the disadvantages of obesity and the factors elevating the onset of obesity in them.

Professor Lucilla Poston, Director of maternal and fetal research at King's College London and co-author of the guidelines, said that the women who are essentially overweight during their pregnancy invite almost all sorts of health complications.

“The increasing prevalence of obesity among pregnant women in the UK is very worrying as there are so many potential risks for the mother and her baby”, she said.
