A recent study has revealed that inflammation in humans can be cured by using resveratrol, which is a plant extract.
The production of this substance in several plants takes place when they are attacked by bacteria or fungi. The substance is found in the skin of red grapes and red wine.
It is already known that the substance helps in increasing the life in yeast and also has an anti inflammatory effect in lower animals.
The substance can also be produced in the laboratory by synthesis and is also marketed as a nutritional supplement.
The scientists have found out that the suppression of reactive oxygen species or free radicals takes place with the help of resveratrol. These molecules are not stable and result in the release of certain factors that cause inflammation.
UB research Assistant Professor of Medicine, Husam Ghanim, revealed that the substance is also beneficial in increasing the resistance to insulin. The blood samples depicted the inhibition of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which is an inflammatory protein.
Paresh Dandona, MD, PhD, UB disclosed that the product that they used contained only 20% of resveratrol. Therefore, it is likely that some other substance is also responsible for the positive effects.
