Calcium Supplements May Increase the Heart Attack Risk

Ian Reid, A professor from the Auckland University has said that calcium supplements are likely to develop the risk of heart attack in the people consuming them. If a person intakes 500 mg calcium supplements every day, then the risk may be up to 30%.

He suggested that regular intake of the calcium pill is not good for health. However, he also said that in few cases it is very necessary for a person to take the medicine.

This was based on the reports of 12,000 people. It was carried out in New Zealand and America and it took four years to complete it. The study has appeared in the British Medical Journal.

Researchers have especially emphasized on the osteoporosis patients, as they are more vulnerable to the risk. They also said that deficiency of calcium should be fulfilled through the diet as it is not harmful.

However, Michelle Palmer from Natural Products New Zealand has said that the finding cannot be generalized, as it was carried out on a group of people, who were taking calcium supplements.

Therefore, it is suggested that an appropriate study should be carried out in order to confirm the results.

Medsafe, on the other hand has said that it won’t reduce the number of calcium supplements available for the people.
