Shellharbour Square Fish Market Fined for Violating Food Act

Having violated the Food Act, Shellharbour Square Fish Market has been ordered to pay $40,500 in fines and $11,500 in costs by the Local Court.

Shellharbour Square Fish Market, one of the NSW South Coast’s principal seafood operators, had reportedly failed to label the products with the Country of Origin, which according to the Food Act was mandatory.

Magistrate Greg Hart remarked that the matter had been brought to the notice of the fish market on several occasions by the NSW Food Authority, but the former failed to treat the issue seriously.

Several infringement notices and proceedings had been issued on its name by the officers of the Food Authority but since it did not comply with them, it now had to pay the price.

The fish market has been impeached on eight charges, five of which were the latest and the other three had taken place in October 2008.

Magistrate Hart said, “From time to time health warnings are given through the media, alerting consumers that they should not consume certain foods which have been identified as constituting a risk”.

With the NSW Government getting more and more aware about the public demand for safe food information, the Name and Shame registry ensures that your hard earned money goes to the safest food service.
